How To

How can I get started in Base Jumping

Base jumping (also called free-fall Parachuting) allows participants to jump from fixed objects (usually cliffs), including bridges, towers and buildings, with no equipment attached. Jumping off an object is done by the participant. The parachute then helps them land safely. It's similar to skydiving but you don’t have to wear a parachute or hold your breath as you wait to open it.

A wingsuit is the most common type base jumper. A wingsuit is composed of two pieces of fabric that are sewn together. One piece covers your chest and arms while the other covers your legs. Special boots are worn by the jumper that allow him/her stand upright in flight. The jumper pulls on the straps to his/her feet to descend. This causes the material covering the legs and legs to bunch up. This creates a large air pocket underneath the jumper. The jumper can open his/her parachute if the air pocket is large enough and land safely.

Some base jumpers use powered suits to help propel themselves through the air faster. A backpack containing batteries and an under-cloth jet pack are the two main components of powered suits. These packs contain small rockets that shoot jets of hot gas at high speeds. This creates thrust which propels the jumper forward. These suits can be quite loud and heavy.

BASE jumping is a sport that many people don't understand. Make sure you fully understand the risks associated with learning BASE jumping. You could fall off a cliff or hit an obstacle upside-down or head-on. Or you could collide with another jumper. Although BASE jumping isn't always dangerous, it can prove very dangerous if done incorrectly. To avoid injury, check out the following safety tips before attempting to BASE jump.

Practice safe BASE jumping techniques starting on a small hill. Before jumping from a bigger hill, you should take a few moments to become familiar with the terrain. Also, be aware of weather conditions. Avoid jumping when the wind is not blowing in your face. Foggy skies are another danger. If you can see more then 10ft ahead of you, you may need to wait for the clouds to clear. Third, make sure you have the right gear. A helmet, goggles, gloves and a full-suit with a harness are all essential. Fourth, ensure you have a plan. In case something goes wrong, you should ask another person to come along with you. Don't ever jump by yourself. Always have someone to watch over you.
